State Library, Chandigarh
In comparizon to the Central State Library in Sector 17 the State Library is quite younger. It was established on 14th August 1995, forty years after the establishment of the Central State Library. The establishment of this library is attributed to the ever growing population of the city, unprecendeted development of adjoining satellite cities of Mohali and Panchkula and the inability of the existing Central State Library in meeting the needs of the readers.
The library was started with a collection of mere 5000 books. Of these 2000 were donated by the Central State Library and 3000 were contributions from the patrons. Over the years the library collection has multiplied more than 19 times.
Now the library is expanding its horizons both internally and externally. It started its services with two more branches, one in Sector 41, Badheri and another one a reading hall in Budail.
Presently the library has two storey building and is spread over an area of more than 2400 sq.yrd. The building is incomplete and one more storey will be added shortly. The building has been divided into sections as under,
Basement consists of Acquisition Section, Children Section, Binding Section and Reading Hall.
Ground Floor accomodates Help Desk, Librarian's Room, Office and Magazine-cum-Newspaper Section.
The First Floor has Reference Section, Circulation Section, Technical Section and Stacks. The library also shares a part of this floor with Chandigarh Art Council.
Sector 34 is gaining importance as the city sub-center after sector 17. Many importance offices occupy this sector. Also many shopping complexes are coming up in here. The sector is easily accessible from both ISBT Sector 17 and New ISBT Sector 43. The library is near the Sector 34 Gurdwara and is easily accessible from the main road.
