District Library, Bilaspur
Origin
Bilaspur has long history. The rulers of Bilaspur claim their descent from Chanderwanshi Rajputs of Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that the Bilaspur town was established around 1650 A.D. by Deep Chand of Kahlur state. He wanted a new capital for his state and chose a place on the left bank of river Satluj, called 'Beas gufa' after the name of Rishi Vyas. Later it became famous as Bilaspur. However the original town was submerged in the 'Govind Sagar' on 1st July, 1954 when Bhakhra Dam was constructed. A new township above the old one has come up at a higher altitude.
The library was established in the year 1953 at the location of the old city of Bilaspur. It was shifted to the present location in the year 1960 when the city was displaced due to the construction of the Bhakhra dam subsequent flooding of the area with the water.
