Gurdwara Library, Bala Sahib, New Delhi

Origin

The library was started in 1980s by the efforts of local devotees.

Building

The library was started at an old building in the premises but was shifted to this newly constructed building around two years back. This is a fairly spacious room with sitting capacity of about 25 people on the central table. The librarian's desk is on the one side of the entrance. Book almirah's are on sides along the walls.

Location

The gurdwara is located on the Ring Road at the Maharani Bag in New Delhi. It is at distance of less than 1 K.M. from Sarai Kale Khan inter state bus terminal (ISBT). The library is along the Temporary Shoe Deposition Stall for the visitors as the shoes are not allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Staff

The library has one supervision librarian incharge. In addition staff from the gurdwara are deployed by the management whenever such need arises to assist the librarian.

Collection

The library has a collection of around 1500+ books. The collection includes a substatial portion of the documents donated by the regular visitors at the Gurdwara. These range from used books to religious scriptures. People find it difficult to manage the scriptures at home as they demand special doctrines to be followed called Maryada. Also in Sikhism they are taught to pool their resources for the benefit of the unprivileged.

The library subscribes to newspapers in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages.

Membership

The library has a very few registered members but receives many visiters in its newspaper section and research scholars to consult its resources.

Information Technology

The library is providing its services manually.

Working Hours

The usual library working hours are 8:30am to 3pm. However, during demanding period the work hours are increased upto 7pm and one more staff shift is increased.
