Bhai Vir Singh Public Library, New Delhi


Origin

Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan was established in 1958 as a Literary and Cultural organization to commemorate the memory of the Father of Modern Punjabi Literature Bhai Vir Singh. Bhai Vir Singh (5th December, 1872 - 10th June, 1957) was a prominent literary, cultural and social personality. He preduced a valuable Punjabi literature during his lifetime although he was a scholar in many other languages like, English, Urdu, Sanskrit and Persian etc.

The foundation stone of the building was laid by the President V.V. Giri in March, 1972 and the memorial was inaugurated by the President N. Sanjeeva Reddy in 1978. The library has been an Integral part of the Sahitya Sadan since its inception. All the literature composed by Bhai Vir Singh and also the literature on Bhai Vir Singh composed by others can be found in the library along with literature on Sikhism and Punjab.

Building

Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan has a spacious and beautiful building with lush green lawns of its own. The library is in the 2nd floor. It offers a comfortable and cozy environment for its readers. On the one side are the book racks and on the other side is the Librarian's cabin.

Location

The Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan is located on the Bhai Veeer Singh Road near Gole Market. It is about 1Km from the Connaught Place, a famous shopping centre in Delhi. The library is on the 1st Floor.

Collection

The library has a rich collection of approximately 45,000 books, of which almost 50% are Punjabi literature. Other half of the literature is in English, Hindi, Urdu and some other languages. The library catalogue and services have been automated using Liberty ILMS. Some rare manuscripts collections have also been digitized. Many private collections have been donated to the library by some of its users over time. A audio collection of interviews of eminent personalities close to Bhai Vir Singh is also being developed. Theses and dissertations on related subjects from universities from India and abroad are also being added to the library collections.

Membership

Basically its a Public Library and access to rich collection is provided free of charge to visitors. However, membership is provided to its regular users on annual basis. A membeship form can be downloaded from Here.

An annual membership fee of Rs.500 is charged along with one time payment of Rs.500 as security, which is refundable and is carried forward during subsequent renewals.

Information Technology

The library is fully automated using state-of-the-art software Liberty from SoftLink. OPAC is available for visitors to browse through library collection. Wi-fi connectivit is provided to the visitors on demand and photocopy facility is also available. Some rare manuscript collections have been digitized and the library also maintains an audio collection of important/rare interviews of prominent literary personalities. The library is member of Delhi Library Network (DelNet).

Working Hours

Library Hours 10am to 5:30pm (Monday to Saturday)

Public Reading Hours 10:30am to 5pm (Monday to Saturday)

The library remains closed on sundays, 2nd & 4th Saturdays every month and all other gazetted holidays. On 5th Saturday (if any) the library opens for half day 10am to 1pm.
