Bhaktivedanta Library (Vedic Library), New Delhi
Origin
ISKCON also known colloquially as the Hare Krishna Movement is a Gaudiya Vaishnava religious organization. It was founded in 1965 in New York by Shri A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Its philosophy is based on Hindu Scriptures, mainly Srimad Bhagavatam and the Bhagavad-Gita.
The temple is named Shri Shri Radha-Parthasarathi Temple but is popularly known as ISKCON Temple. There is another ISKCON temple in Delhi called Shri Shri Radhika-Raman Temple in Punjabi Bag, Delhi.
The library was established way back in 2000 by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Counciousness), New Delhi.
Building
The library is housed in a very peaceful spacious room with a sitting capacity of 25-30 readers at a time. Books are arranged neatly in almirahs along a side wall and the librarian/director occupies a separate cabin.
Location
The ISKCON temple is situated on the Hare Krishna Hill in East of Kailash, New Delhi. Along with the religious importance it holds for Vaishanava devottees, the temple is also an important tourist attraction in Delhi due to its unique architecture. The library is situated on the ground floor of the ISKCON premises, near the Life Membership Office.
Staff
The library is headed by Director, Shri Sahasra Netra Das. For routine management there is a library attendent. The library receives professional support from many volunteers from time to time.
Collection
The library abounds in Literature by ISKCON founding father Shri A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Almost all the literature composed by him during his lifetime is available for consultation by the devottees. Along with that there is literature by other prominent authors associated with the movement, covering almost all aspects of life. Bhagwat Gita is the essence of ISKCON, all the ISKCON literature composed and the library.
The library has more than 2000 volumes and has multimedia section with a documentary and video collection.
The ISKCON Delhi monthly newsletter The New Wave is also available in the library.
Membership
The library is for Reference purpose only and doesn't offer regular membership. All the literature is for consultation purpose within the library permises only and no lending service is available. However, anybody can visit the library for specific information needs. Visiters range from devottees to research scholars.
Information Technology
The library has a PC with internet connectivity and other relevant hardware for routine office use. The automation and digitization of library collection is yet to be started.
Working Hours
The library provides its services from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday.
