Rampur Raza Library


Origin

The library is a great source of Indo-Islamic literature. It was established by erstwhile Rampur State, which was founded by Nawab Faizullah Khan in 1774. He started with his own personal and official collection of documents and articles. Later the library collection was enriched with acquisition from other sources also. The library was also patronized by Nawab Muhammad Yusuf Ali Khan 'Nazim'. A separate department was created for the library and it was shifted to the newly constructed rooms of Kothi Genralie. Later Nawah Kalbe Ali Khan (1865-87) also patronized the library. Being a scholar himself he too enriched the collection.

Building

The library is offering its services from the Hamid Manzil inside the fort of Rampur since 1957. The building alongwith the adjoining land and Rang Mahal were transferred to the Government of India by the Uttar Pradesh State Government on 18th November, 1982 for the purpose.

Location

Rampur is the District Headquarters of the District with the same name. It is in Moradabad Divion of Uttar Pradesh state of India. It is surrounded in the North by District Udham Singh Nagar, in the South by Badaun, in the East by Bareilly and in the West by Moradabad district.

The city is located at a distance of about 300 Kms from the state capital Lucknow and approximately 190 Kms from the national capital New Delhi.

The library is located Hamid Manzil of the Qila Rampur.

Collection

The library has a valuable collection of Manuscripts, Miniature Painings, Specimens of Islamic Calligraphy and Astronomical Instruments etc. The library has Palm-leaf manuscripts in Indian varnacular languages Telgu, Sanskrit, Hindi, Kannarh, Sinhali and Tamil etc. It also has manuscripts in many foreign languages like Arabic, Persian, Utdu, Turkish and Pushto etc. The library has its own publication section also.

Information Technology

The library catalogue is available online for public to search. The library is in the process of digitization of its collections and will be making them available online very soon.

Working Hours

Library opens from Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Fridays and public holidays the library remains closed.
