Punjab Public Library System is a group of public libraries in the state of Punjab, India. There is one Central State Library at Patiala and 14 other district libraries located at different district headquarters. All these are maintained by the state Goverment. In some cities there are Municipal Libraries also but they are maintained by the local municipality commettees and are very diverse in their size, services and functions mainly depending upon the condition of their governing bodies.
All the 15 public libraries in the state, including state central library at Patiala are managed by Govt. of Punjab through Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education. However, for the purpose of effective management the libraries have been placed under the control of two seprate heads with their own individual offices.
The Financial and Administrative functions are managed and controlled by the Director Public Instructions, Colleges-DPI(C) with its head office at Chandigarh. The technical functions are managed by the Chief Librarian with his head office at M.M. Central State Library, Patiala. The libraries meet the information requirements of the population of the district. Being Public Libraries, they serve diverse kinds of clientele including students, researchers, servicemen, businessmen and house wives etc. These are acquiring and making available all kinds of documentary resources like general books, reference sources, newspapers and magazines/periodicals etc.
