About

Rajsthan is the largest state in India covering more than 10% area of the country. It shares its bundaries in the north with Punjab, in the north-east with Haryana & Urrar Pradesh, in south-east with Madhya Pradesh, in south-west with Gujrat and in west with Pakistan. The state has been divided into 7 Divisions and 33 Districts for administrative purpose with state capital at Jaipur.

The state covers most of the Great Indian Thar Desert and one of the world's oldest mountain ranges, the Aravalli Range, divides the state into almost two parts.

The region is of great historical importance. One of the world's oldest civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization, flourished in this area. Kalibangan in Hanumangarh district was a major provincial capital of the civilization. Later the area was ruled by Saka Rulers. Many tribes like, Meenas, Bhils, Gurjars, Bishnois, Rajputs, Yadavs, Ahirs and Jats contributed towards the development of state and gave it a distinct identity. They also played a vital role in the history of India. The tough terrain turned them into hardworking people and they were great worriors too. They delayed the penetration by mughals and other Muslim invaders into Indian subcontinent for more than 300 years. They fought countless battles but stood there as a wall.

The modern education in the state got a major boost in the 19th century with unprecedented British intervention in the local politics. Schools and colleges started coming up in the region especially the capital Jaipur.

The state has an extensive network of public libraries with one State Central Library at Jaipur, 7 Divisional Libraries and one library each at district headquarters plus panchayat libraries. In all there are more than 250 public libraries in the system. The system is managed by the Language & Libraries Department of Rajasthan headquartered at state capital Jaipur.
