Rajkya Sarvajanik Zila Pustakalya (District Library), Churu


Origin

Churu is the small town and district headquarter of Churu district of Rajsthan state of India. The town is famous as gateway the the great Thar Desert of India.

The town is said to have been established by a Jat (mainly an agricultural community of India) named Churu in 1620 AD. Before the independence of India it was part of the Bikaner state. In 1948 it was established as an independent district after the reorganization of Bikaner State.

The library was established on 12th March, 1956. It was started in an rented building called Kothari's House and shifted many places before coming to the present building.

Building

The library is housed in a two storey building. The ground floor has the Reading Room (25 X 60 sq. feet), store room and public convenience etc.

The Ist floor accomodaes the main Sack Room (25 X 60 sq. feet), store room, Librarian's room and public conveniences etc.

Location

Churu is located at a distance of about 285 Kms from national capital New Delhi and around 200 Kms from state capital Rajsthan. It lies on the NH - 65. It is surrounded by on the north by Ganganagar District, on the east by Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajsthan and Hisar district of Haryana, on the south by Nagaur district and on the west by Bikaner district.

The library is located opposite the Ram Mandir on the Station Road. It is about 2 Kms from the city main bus stand and about 1 Km from the Railway Station.

Collection

The library has a rich collection of 46,000+ books. The whole collection has been divided into many general and special collections arranged according to DDC-19 classification scheme. The collection has been catalogued using e-pustakalya software.

The library subscribes to 10 newspapers in English & Hindi and 80 magazines.

Membership

The library offers membership for a period of one session (1st April to 31st March) and is renewable thereafter. The membership fee is as under,

Membership Fee:

  • Adults Rs 30 (form price Rs 5)

Information Technology

The library has one computer with internet connectivity and photocopy facility is also available.

Working Hours

The library remains closed on every Tuesday. The library timings vary according to the season.

  • Summer (Ist April to 30th September) 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm
  • Winter (Ist October to 31st March) 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
